Life is all about setting expectations and where people tend to over do is when they allow those expectations to become to dominate. Expectations and assumptions tend to go hand in hand, we set expectations and then we assume that we can accomplish them over time. It is hard for some folks to allow that expectations are not set in stone and that if they fail to materialize even with the best of efforts that it is not the end of the world. We just have to modify or discard the expectation for others that will still allow us to follow the path we have chosen to live. Even that needs flexibility; don't you feel that to be true as well?
Our achievements in the dojo must be tempered with patience. We cannot make things happen outside of their own good time, it is a matter of natural processes. Nature, speaking of its evolutionary processes, occurs in the natural order and time due to influences inside and outside the very person or thing evolving.
This is why, "hope" is one of many synonyms that also provide for expectations along with assumptions. The practitioner must become aware of and wary of developing expectations and assumptions from what is offered in the dojo by the sensei, senpai and kohai for their expectations and assumptions are personal and personalized. Develop realistic and reality-based expectations and assumptions that are personal and personalized for you and only you.
Turn the focus inside yourself to determine ability, at the moment, and objectives, at the moment, which will set your own goals and objectives feeding the expectations you set for yourself so that your assumptions as to how that will process are realistic, for you.
Just because the ad's say, "Learn karate quickly and make black belt in one year," does not mean everyone will have the natural capabilities to achieve that goal. Provided the goal is even possible for anyone. It is easy to have one's expectations become unrealistic setting one's assumptions way to high leaving failure as expected rather than merely possible. Failure is possible but that also falls into expectations and assumptions that are either reasonable and possible or unreasonable and impossible.
It is the person themselves who holds all the responsibility for to allow others to set you up in wanting, rather than needing, things way over the possibilities of the individual leaves them expecting way to much and assuming abilities are way to high, at the moment.
The real key here is self-responsibility for perceiving what is possible and accepting that the possible is provided in a natural way in levels of achievement that are always expected and assumed by people who understand.
Set possible expectations then develop possible assumptions so that you can create a plan, live the plan and have appropriate tactics and strategies that will get you to each and every level in their natural and proper order until you achieve realistic and possible goals and objectives.
Everything is possible, in its own way; its own time; and in each moment from level to level until you reach the stars - leave the moon for others for it is the stars, in all their twinkled multitudes, that gives us a broad, comprehensive and completeness called, "enlightenment!"
